Scarring is a natural part of the healing process after an injury. Its appearance and its treatment depend on multiple factors. The depth and size of the wound or cut and the location of the injury matter. So do your age, genes, sex, and ethnicity.
These are several different types of scars including:
- Keloid scars. These scars are the result of an overly aggressive healing process. Keloid scars are most common among people with dark skin.
- Contracture scars. If your skin has been burned, you may have a contracture scar.
- Hypertrophic scars. These are raised, red scars that are similar to keloids but do not go beyond the boundary of the injury.
- Acne scars. If you’ve had severe acne, you probably have the scars to prove it.
The Artisan Laser System has several lasers; one of them is a state-of-the-art fractional non-ablative laser for skin resurfacing and treatment of textural irregularities, surgical scars, acne scars, stretch marks, and melasma. This is a non invasive treatment with no downtime. Dr. Gargiulo has used the system for several years with great success in treating all the above conditions. The Artisan laser technology breaks down facial lines and creases and helps generate new, healthy and smoother skin.
Fractional non-ablative skin resurfacing uses hundreds of high-precision micro-beams of laser to create narrow, deep columns of tissue coagulation in the skin, while the top layer of skin intact. After treatment, the skin underneath heals rapidly from the edge of these tiny ‘columns’. The healthy cells in the untouched spots promote rapid healing of the entire treatment area, resulting in faster recovery time and minimal side effects. All the changes in the skin are due to a new production or remodeling of collagen stimulated by the laser. Changes occur slowly over several months and treatments needs to be repeated in a monthly basis. Normally 6-8 treatments are needed.
