Awake Liposuction
in Long Island, NY

At Age Focus, we offer an advanced solution for patients to address resistant fat pockets through an Awake Liposuction. Aging, weight changes, genetics, and other factors can lead to localized stubborn fat deposits. These can not be eliminated with diet or exercise alone. Fortunately, with changing cosmetic procedures today, it may be easier now to get closer to a highly chiseled physique.

Our triple board-certified surgeon, Dr. Juan Gargiulo, has performed hundreds of successful body-contouring operations and helped many men and women restore their confidence and attractiveness. What Is an Awake
Liposuction?

An Awake Liposuction is a less-invasive cosmetic surgery meant to get rid of excess fat in the body without putting the patient under general anesthesia. In contrast, Dr. Gargiulo performs this body contouring procedure by using a mixture of local anesthesia and mild sedation. This combo keeps patients comfortable but awake during the operation. The idea behind this procedure is sculpting and contouring the body by suctioning unwanted fat deposits from the abdomen, hips, thighs, arms, or chin.
Most of the patients choose this surgery when they want to deal with stubborn fat pockets. They can affect their self-confidence and body image. Though an Awake Liposuction removes fat cells, it is not a weight reduction procedure. Rather, it is indicated for those at or near their ideal weight who have isolated excess fat deposits. It can be performed in a few areas of the body, depending on the patient’s needs, and combined with other treatments to achieve optimal liposuction results.

Areas For Awake Liposuction

Awake Liposuction is a versatile procedure used to target different areas of the body for fat removal. The treatment gives smoother, more contoured shapes, which can benefit different areas, including:
Abdomen
It is the most popular area for the procedure, as this is usually where resistant fat builds up. Liposuction helps in flattening the tummy and can make it look more toned.
Liposuction can be performed on both the inner and outer thighs to create a leaner, firmer leg. This allows for smoother contours and reduces the appearance of “saddlebags.”
Despite living healthily, it can be difficult to lose fat from the sides of the waist. Liposuction can help create a slimmer, more defined waist by getting rid of any excess fat cells in this area.
Fat pockets in the back are also difficult to deal with. This procedure is particularly useful for eliminating surplus skin in the upper back and bra line areas.
Extra fat in the hips can alter body proportions. Liposuction helps to recontour these areas and produce a more symmetrical silhouette.
The arms are notorious for retaining stubborn fat, which resists exercise. This surgical procedure contours the arms, therefore making them more defined and toned.
Fatty deposits on the knees may make them appear uneven. Liposuction can refine the area, creating smoother, more sculpted legs.

Awake Liposuction Techniques

At Age Focus, we use various Awake Liposuction techniques. These techniques vary by the patient’s unique anatomy, how much fat they want to remove, and what type of liposuction device we use:
Tumescent Liposuction
The Tumescent technique is the one most commonly applied in Awake Liposuction. The tumescent solution includes saline, a local anesthetic, and a vasoconstrictor. Dr. Gargiulo applies it to areas from which fat would be removed. This solution increases swelling in fat cells, making removal softer and less prone to bleeding during the process. It works to numb the tissues, keeping the patient comfortable. Once the fat has been softened, Dr. Gargiulo uses a small cannula to suction out the fat, carefully contouring the area.
This procedure includes the use of a cannula that vibrates at an extremely fast external speed to break down fat cells before aspiration. This makes fat removal easier and less physically demanding for the surgeon. What is more, it causes less trauma to the surrounding tissues. It is especially useful in areas where the fat is more solid, such as the back and upper abdomen. What is more, it provides for smoother body contours.

HD Lipo focuses more on detailed sculpting to create a toned, athletic look. With this more advanced technique, fat is taken away from certain areas so that the muscle definition can be accentuated and the body contours become more dramatic. This surgical procedure is often combined with liposuction of other areas to provide a refined, sculpted silhouette. HD Lipo requires a high level of skill and precision. Therefore, it is best for those patients who wish to achieve a chiseled, muscular appearance.

Awake Liposuction Procedure Explained

Initial Consultation and Testing

During the initial consultation, Dr. Gargiulo conducts a thorough patient examination. He examines the patient’s body and their desires and analyzes their medical records. This way, he can suggest the best Awake Lipo technique possible. This is also an opportunity to discuss anesthesia options, namely, local anesthesia with minimal sedation. Our surgeon also provides a cost estimation of the overall procedure.
After this, the patients are cleared of all possible underlying medical issues. Dr. Gargiulo may order blood work as well as other tests to ensure that it is safe for them to proceed. Some contraindications for Awake Liposuction include:
If any medical problems are detected, Dr. Gargiulo will recommend that they be treated before surgery.

The Surgery

On the surgery day, Dr. Gargiulo marks the areas of liposuction. Then, he injects local anesthesia into the treatment zones to numb the area and make the entire procedure comfortable. Mild sedation is also provided to keep the patient relaxed and at ease.
After the anesthesia is administered and has taken effect, Dr. Gargiulo makes small, unnoticeable incisions on targeted areas of the body. Then, he carefully inserts a cannula through those tiny incisions to remove fat. The type of removal depends on the type of an Awake Lipo chosen. Next, the fat is carefully extracted, with no interference in the surrounding tissues.
Once the fat has been removed and the contours shaped, the incisions are generally closed with resorbable sutures. This negates the need for suture removal. The sutures will dissolve naturally with time. The entire procedure generally lasts between one and three hours, depending on how many areas are treated and the complexity of the procedure.

Add-On Procedure:
Fat Transfer

A lot of patients opt to have Awake Liposuction together with a fat transfer. During this procedure, fat that has been taken out is cleaned and put back into different parts of the body to give it a more rounded or augmented appearance. Most often, fat is transferred to the buttocks (this is also known as a Brazilian Butt Lift), breasts, or face. Combining these two types of surgery can help improve overall body shape. It enables our surgeon to take away fat from where there’s too much of it while restoring volume elsewhere. However, having both operations at once may mean a patient needs slightly longer to recuperate fully.

Recovery After an Awake Liposuction

Immediate Recovery

An Awake Liposuction is typically an outpatient procedure. All patients are able to go back home on the very same day since only local anesthesia and slight sedation are administered. It is normal to expect some minor swelling and bruising around areas where incisions were made. Any pain can typically be controlled with medications prescribed by our surgeon. Dr. Gargiulo provides each patient with detailed directions for post-op care so that they can heal as quickly and comfortably as possible.

Initial Weeks

Patients usually have to wear compression garments for 6-8 weeks post-Awake Liposuction. It minimizes swelling and provides support for their new body shape. During this time, patients can do some gentle walking since it’s good for circulation. However, they should steer clear from any activities that are classified as heavy lifting or rigorous exercise until Dr. Gargiulo says they’re safe to do so. The tiny stitches used tend to disappear by themselves, so there’s no need to take them out.

Long-Term Results

In most cases, swelling and bruising go away within a couple of weeks. However, it might be 3 to 6 months before patients see final results. As their body gets used to its new shape, any leftover swelling will also diminish. Staying at the same weight and maintaining healthy habits are essential for maintaining their look over the long term. We recommend checking in regularly with Dr. Gargiulo during follow-up visits after surgery. It is an important way to make sure everything is healing as it should.

Candidates for an Awake
Liposuction

Candidates for an Awake Liposuction
Localized Fat Deposits
Patients with stubborn fat deposits are ideal candidates. Usually, most of these cannot be improved by dieting and exercising.
Large weight fluctuations could minimize how long the results can last. So, it is advisable to avoid any weight gain or loss pre- and post-operation and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Elastic skin means that a patient’s body can easily “adapt” to its new contours.
Nicotine delays the healing process and involves a number of risks. The patient should either be a non-smoker or be ready to stay away from smoking four weeks before and after the surgery.
An Awake Liposuction does not involve a means of losing weight. Rather, it requires that clients already come as close as possible to an ideal weight.

Benefits of an Awake Liposuction

Patients Can Provide Feedback During Treatment

An exclusive advantage of an Awake Liposuction is that patients are conscious throughout, meaning they can give feedback as the procedure takes place. This enables Dr Gargiulo to tweak their treatment if needed. This way, he can guarantee top-notch results while also delivering a service with a personal touch like no other.

Quick Recovery with Same-Day Discharge

Because an Awake Liposuction is minimally invasive and done with local anesthesia, patients go home just a few hours after their procedure. It is usually not necessary to stay overnight in the clinic. This means patients can get back to their everyday routines soon, with very little disruption (if any) to their schedule.

Minimal Scarring

The incisions made during the Awake Liposuction are quite tiny and intentionally positioned in inconspicuous locations. Due to this, scarring is minimal and sometimes hardly visible at all. This helps patients achieve an overall sleeker look: one without obvious marks.

No General Anesthesia

With Awake Liposuction, which involves local anesthesia and mild sedation, patients won’t have to worry about the negative side effects of general anesthesia. These may include feeling sick, dizzy, or taking a long time to get better after surgery. This also lowers the duration spent in the operating room while making the procedure safer for patients.

Natural-Looking, Sculpted Results

Using Awake Liposuction’s meticulous fat elimination techniques, patients can attain smooth, authentic contours. By tailoring the procedure to suit their body shape, they benefit from a harmonious appearance that looks sculpted. It helps bring out the body’s existing proportions.
