The AgeFocus Weight Loss Program is based on:
What is a low glycemic diet?
Low glycemic refers to those foods that do not raise blood sugar quickly. When blood sugar increases quickly, insulin also increases in order to lower blood sugar. When blood sugar lowers, we feel hungry and eat, and the cycle repeats itself. Eventually the insulin may not function well, and we become at risk for developing diabetes. Low glycemic foods are important because they absorb gradually and provide the necessary nutrition without the high peaks of insulin.
We use your resting metabolic rate (from Metacheck), your percentage of body fat (from DEXA) and other measurements (weight, height, body type and lifestyle) to determine a specific diet for you. Depending on how fast you want to lose the excess weight, the number of daily calories will be determined.
A printout of daily meals with your caloric needs, including a shopping list, will be prepared for you in our program.
Medical Foods and Supplements
Due to mineral depletion in our soil, even if you follow an optimal diet, you may not be getting all the necessary nutrients. Nutraceuticals (pharmaceutical-grade vitamins and supplements) are needed to accompany your balanced diet.
As a reseller of Metagenics, Douglas Labs, and Pure Encapsulations, we provide medical foods and snack bars which make it easier for you to follow a low glycemic meal when you’re in a rush, or when the right food isn’t available. They also help you to lose the weight faster. We have specific nutraceuticals available for those with diabetes, high cholesterol, high-blood pressure and inflammation.
Exercise
This is an essential component of the AgeFocus weight-loss program. Numerous medical studies show the benefits exercise brings to daily life. A good program based on the concept of interval training can resolve the “time” issue some people have with working out.
Unlike “aerobic exercise,” interval training requires less time with greater gain. It promotes the release of testosterone and growth hormone that counteract the temporary increase of cortisol. It also provides lasting benefits of an increased metabolism for up to 48 hours after exercise is finished.
Weightlifting is also a critical component of our program. It allows for an increase in muscle mass (lean mass) which raises the resting metabolic rate. The combination of interval training and weightlifting has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity, decrease abdominal fat and blood pressure, and increase HDL (good cholesterol). Stretching is also part of a well-rounded workout, helping to increase flexibility and prevent injuries.
Dangers of Obesity
Obesity has become an epidemic in the United States, as well as in other parts of the world. More than 1/3 of the U.S. population (adults and children) are obese. In children the numbers have doubled (quadrupled in adolescents) in the last 30 years.
Along with this problem comes a myriad of other health-related conditions such as coronary heart disease, high-blood pressure, stroke, type 2 diabetes, abnormal blood fats (high cholesterol and triglycerides), metabolic syndrome, cancer, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, obesity hypo-ventilation syndrome, reproductive problems, and gallstones. Many of these conditions can go together and lead to even more serious complications.
In fact, because of this, people who are 40% overweight are twice as likely to die prematurely as an average-weight person. Obesity is linked to higher rates of chronic conditions than smoking, drinking, or poverty, and obese individuals spend more on health care.
At AgeFocus, we pride ourselves with helping the people of Long Island with their weight loss goals. The first step is to see if you are obese or in danger of becoming obese. Fill out our BMI Calculator where one of our weight loss experts will get in touch with you about your body mass index (The result usually indicates whether you are normal weight, overweight, or obese). They will also explain to you our two weight loss programs and strategies to help you get within a healthy BMI range.
Don’t become another statistic! Avoid obesity!
